We will continue to share our progress with you to give you an idea of what awaits you at the unFIXcon 23.

DAY 2

12:30 - 13:30

PATTERN

Base

BASE

The Base is the group where people feel safe and at home.

At the unFIXcon, this is where we all come together for presentations, impulses, cases – inspiration.

Moderation

Henriette Wienges

Henriette Wienges

The Elephant in the Room.

Henriette Wienges loves system thinking and a structure-oriented approach toward organizations. Over and over again she is amazed, at how structures define a great part of the “what”, the “how” and sometimes even the “if” of our work, while helping us to understand our environment, and make it strategically manageable and efficient. And yes – of course, she is working agile and human-centered. Henriette is an experienced systemic Agile and Flight Level Coach. She is the founder of The Elephant in the Room.

PATTERN

MISSIONS

Mission Teams are one teaming option: The team itself is short-lived, but team membership changes rarely.

At the unFIXcon, we will ask you to go on missions sometimes. How often you switch between teams is left to you.

The games and mindset she’s adopted from Improv have had a significant positive influence on her day-to-day life.

Embrace Your Creative Self: The Power of Instinct and Inspiration

Kadri Pirn

What do improvisation theater and organizational design have in common, you might ask? Join this workshop and find out! In short, improv games enable people to connect with the moment, themselves, and with their creative minds. And even though the improv games are not related to work, they can easily be connected to the topics. The three core rules of improvisation: “Every suggestion is welcomed,” “Use ‘Yes, and’ mindset,” and “Your goal is to make your partner look good,” are also very valid in any team formation. Improv cards are already used in Management 3.0. Let’s try out some more interactive games that you can easily apply in your workshops!

Speaker

Stefan Mintert

Stefan Mintert

Kutura GmbH

Since Stefan began his career as a consultant more than 25 years ago, he has witnessed many poor management decisions and frustrated employees. When he was in the management role himself, he also found that the job was not easy. His role models turned out to be uninspiring and unknowledgeable. For this reason, he ceased managing his people and began to involve them. That was the beginning of a long, satisfying, and still ongoing search for ways to manage companies and teams in a way that gives all employees a chance to work together on something inspiring and fulfilling. His repertoire today includes topics like Agility, Management 3.0, Lean Startup, unFIX, Happiness at Work, Blue Ocean Strategy, Feedback as a Competitive Advantage, Stress in Teams, Successful Worplace culture. But in a nutshell, it’s always about helping people thrive and grow within the context of their work. For him, the most exciting area of research is discovering how to engage management in the required transformation.

Program

WORKSHOP

Stefan Mintert

How to destroy happiness at work? And how to fix it with unFIX?

Stefan Mintert

Should companies be concerned with “Happiness at Work”? From a financial perspective, the answer is yes, because companies that pay attention to the well-being of their employees are more successful. What can be done to increase happiness at work? If you turn the question into the opposite, it becomes easier: How can you destroy “Happiness at Work”? Many employees can answer that question. This session is not a lecture but rather an interactive experiment. Participants share their experiences on how to destroy “Happiness at Work” most effectively. Then, together, we will try to find antidotes using the unFIX repertoire.

Rhetorical Playground

Jakub Karolak

Rhetorical Playground is a workshop/game that allows you to try different presentation approaches, test your creativity, and work with your body and voice. The workshop is run in the spirit of believing that experience and confidence come from the number of repetitions and practice, not from lectures and the number of books read. You will be presenting in front of people you don’t know. You will listen and exchange feedback in short feedback loops to enable more learning. Curious? I will make sure that this workshop is not boring.

How we re-invented unFIX because we were too busy to follow the community

Christian Kolbe

Comsysto Reply has grown from 30 to 150 people since I joined 10+ years ago. The responsibility for “everything” rested on our management team, which became unbearable. We needed organizational change! In a big workshop in 2022, we developed a new organizational structure. Several concepts we introduced and even terms like “crew” are very similar to unFIX, even though we did not know the model at the time.

I will talk about our journey to re-design Comsysto Reply and share our learnings. Later in the day, I will hold a workshop with my colleague Katie Clark to work interactively with you on restructuring organizations.

Software can help

Gabor Daher

At the time of writing this, I’m preparing to release the first piece of software to the public, named the unFIX Plotter. Once that’s out, everyone will be able to (co-)design their Bases with the unFIX Pattern Library – all based on semantic data. But we won’t stop there. The goal is to create a generic tool stack that supports customers in connecting all the good patterns around the internet. During my presentation, I will demo the actual state of the tool and give a sneak peek at future plans, and I would be more than happy to receive some feedback from the audience.

One year with unFIX - Important experiences and insights with training and consulting unFIX patterns and mindset

Jürgen Dittmar & Markus L. Dechert

After taking part in the first unFIX Foundation Workshop in Munich in September 2022 with Jurgen Appelo, both of us started our active journey with unFIX, quite independent from each other.

While Markus is working within a software consultancy supporting rather big clients on their way to agility, Jurgen was consulting with a variety of organizations, small and big, but also gained different perspectives through the discussions within the unFIX workshops he delivered.

In this talk we would like to share our most important experiences and insights we gathered while working with our consulting clients and workshop participants. Even more important, we want to report on the typical but also different benefits and gains our customers found, using the unFIX patterns and language elements as well as typical irritations and misunderstandings we were confronted with.

In doing so, we hope to contribute to the further development of both unFIX as a product and the unFIX community.

Are you still caught in silos? unFIX them!

Joachim Nuszkowski

Joachim has worked with agile, scaled team situations in the past years and often found that silo structures of companies and projects impede team and project success. For nearly a year now, he has been putting unFIX to the test to resolve the problematic silo structures at his current assignment.

Joachim will show us how unFIX and SAFe can work together and how unFIX can help eliminate the silo structures common in large companies. While SAFe considers silos problematic, unFIX offers methods to resolve these structures, providing benefits for scaled agile settings.

Don’t Kata Corners!

Joe Krebs

Three out of four agile transformations fail based on a McKinsey study created in conjunction with the Agile Alliance in 2022. The number one reason is the lack of cultural change. Using a waterfall process for a transformation, like many companies do, is the wrong recipe for success. Culture does not become alive in powerpoint decks or fancy framework illustrations. Culture changes when people change behaviors and do things differently. Those behaviors don’t change overnight. The Agile Kata is a very unique approach. It is a pattern to drive change by deliberately practicing it until it becomes a new habit.

In this talk, Joe shares how the Agile Kata is fundamentally different and how you can apply this universal pattern to improve your agile transformation, reaching a higher degree of business agility, or to improve your agile team process. It can even be the starting point for introducing unFIX into your organization.

How we re-invented unFIX because we were too busy to follow the community

Katie Clark & Christian Kolbe

This is a workshop following Christian’s speech in the morning, in which he explains Comsysto Reply’s journey of re-designing their organization.

In this workshop, we will travel 12 months back in time. We’ll share our situation in 2022 with you and let you come up with an improved organizational structure. By facilitating this interactive session, we enable our participants to experience how to find a good starting point quickly. Finally, we will share some of our learnings since implementing our new structure.

This experience will reduce the fear of starting to change things in your own context once you travel back to the present. You will come equipped with the knowledge of the real-world case study we discussed.

The unFIX mix for crews - build your own template

Jens Thiemann

With unFIX, you are invited to build your own methods. In this workshop, we share one possible approach to combine patterns and describe organizations more in-depth than just on the base level. We will do a deep dive into defining crews and their members, using patterns like Teaming Options, Role Attributes, and Time Commitments, but also talk about the “Job to be done.” After a short introduction, you will be invited to get hands-on and experiment with the corresponding cards. As a result, you will have a template you can use or modify for your needs.

To do so, the first step is to establish a theory of everything, which should cover all decisions for all organizations, which I present during this talk.
